My parents couldn't have made a better decision asking Uncle Stanley and Ciocia Maria to be my godparents. There's no denying it, but I have the best godparents ever.
I remember, whenever they'd come over to celebrate one of my birthdays, how Uncle Stanley always needed to duck down every single time he walked into our house because he was so tall and he wanted to avoid hitting his head against the chandeliers hanging in our lobby. But then, as soon as he saw me, his arms would envelop me in one of his powerful bear hugs.
When video game counsels were banned in our house, he and Ciocia Maria bought me my first Sega Genesis, and I couldn’t have been a happier boy.
Uncle Stanley was always there by my side whenever I received one of the sacraments, being the perfect role model in terms of having faith and devotion to God and family.
When he and Ciocia Maria moved down to Monroe Township, I remember him picking me up from NYC and driving me down to their new house, and upon arrival, he served me a delicious cocktail and grilled a mouthwatering rack of BBQ ribs - he was such an incredible cook.
When I graduated from college and then from grad school, he and Ciocia Maria were both there to celebrate my accomplishments.
When my best friend, Matt, and I biked from NYC to Philadelphia and then back again, both he and Ciocia Maria provided us with an incredible meal and a warm and loving home to rest our weary legs from countless hours and miles of biking.
And for 30 plus years, whenever my birthday arrived on December 4th, nothing brought me greater joy than to hear him and Ciocia Maria sing Stolat to me - his deep voice always came through loud and clear over the phone. His birthday was always the next day, and I loved returning the favor and singing Stolat to him.
This past year, because of his stay at the hospital, I wasn’t expecting a phone call from him, but when I saw Uncle Stanley’s name light up on my phone, I couldn’t believe it. When I picked up, I heard him say, “Happy Birthday, Danny!” with the same zest and excitement he’d always had, before then proceeding to belt out in song, singing me Stolat once more. I didn’t know at the time that that would be the final time he’d ever sing it to me, but I can tell you it was his best performance ever.
In every interaction I had with him, Uncle Stanley modeled and taught me how to be a good man, and even more importantly, an amazing husband and father. The love and devotion he had for Ciocia Maria was special and magical. The love he had for Monica, Eugene, Nicholas, and Lianna was pure and wholesome. The love he showed every one of his friends, extended family, and the members of his church community was abundant and generous.
When I get married and start my own family one day, I will look to Uncle Stanley to be my guide because he was always so patient, reliable, faithful, and loving.
Uncle Stanley, I love you and miss you with all my heart and I will do my best to embody everything you’ve taught me.
